Why Choose English Language?

Language connects us all; it helps to define our identity and relationship with others; it shapes our view of the world; it has a fascinating and colourful history and its uses (and abuses) can create fierce, passionate debate.

What is Involved?

Content

  • Variation and representation in language
  • Children’s language development
  • Language diversity and change
  • Language discourses and debates

Methods of language analysis are integrated into activities throughout the course Modules & Assessment:

At the end of the two-year course there are two written examination papers. Additionally, there will be two pieces of non-examination assessment:

Paper 1: 40% of A-level - focus on variations, representations & children's language development (2 hours)
Paper 2: 40% of A-level - focus on diversity, language change and debates (2 hours)

Non-examination assessment -20% of A-level - a language investigation and a piece of original writing with a commentary. This is 3,500 words long.
