Why Choose English Literature?
If you enjoy reading and think it is important, it is worth considering A-level Literature. An interest in what writers think about people, their relationships and their response to life is one of the basic reasons for studying Literature.
The satisfaction, which derives from understanding how a text is put together; how meaning is created, is just one other reason to choose Literature. When you read widely, it is enriching to compare different writers’ visions of life, and to understand how these views relate to their particular society.
What is Involved?
Modules & Assessment
Component 1: 30 % Poetry (Examination 2 hours, open book). Pre-1900 poetry text from a prescribed list (e.g. Chaucer, The Merchant’s Tale or Christina Rosseti, Selected poems). Two Post-1900 poetry texts (Carol Ann Duffy, Mean Time and Philip Larkin, Whitsun Weddings)
Component 2: 30% Drama (Examination 2 hours, closed book). Shakespeare (Hamlet), Pre-1900 Drama text (The Duchess of Malfi ) and Post-1900 (A Streetcar Named Desire)
Component 3: 20% Unseen texts (Examination 2 hours). Students answer two questions analysing an unseen prose passage and an unseen poem.
Component 4 20% Coursework (2500-3500 words) A comparison of two prose texts, one post-2000, one pre-2000.
