Why Choose Film Studies?

Film is the major art form of the twentieth century. It is the medium of the new millennium and is constantly growing and changing. This course will give you the opportunity to use Film as your ‘texts’, deepening your understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of all areas of cinema. Both critical and creative approaches will be developed. 

What is Involved?

Modules & Assessment - A-level (over 2 years)

  • Component 1 (35% 5 hour examination) – Film Making and Spectatorship: Hollywood Comparison; Recent Hollywood and US Contemporary Indie; Documentary; Short Film 
  • Component 2 (35% 5 hour examination) – Varieties of Global Film; Recent UK Film; Global European Film and World Film; Film Movement (Modernism and Silent); Film Movement (The Avant Garde and Postmodernism)
  • Component 3 (30% Non-examination assessment) – Creative and Analytical Project: Either filmmaking – a short fictional film (4-5 mins) or screenplay – short film (between 1600-1800 word) accompanied by a digitally photographed storyboard. Assessment includes an evaluative analysis of 1250-1500 words worth 10%.
