Why Choose French?
French remains a worldwide language and nothing can substitute for the ability to converse with people in their own language. Careers in business, politics, education, travel, fashion and media are all enhanced by the ability to speak a language. Increasingly, science, technology and medical courses are recognising and valuing the diversity of skills and aptitude for learning an A-level linguist shows.
You should consider studying a language A-level if you enjoy intellectual challenge; if you want a qualification that will be recognised as academically rigorous by universities and employers; and if you are passionate about the world, travel and communication.
What is Involved?
At A-level, you will study the French language and culture from all over the francophone world. Topics covered include family, festivals, media, music, education, work, France under the Occupation, immigration and integration. Students study a film and a novel in French and write about them in exam conditions. There is a considerable amount of time devoted to grammar and learning how to speak and write accurately. Skills learnt at GCSE such as translation, listening and reading are improved and perfected throughout the course.
Assessment is across two written papers and one speaking examination.
