Why Choose Spanish?

The AQA A-level course allows you to build on the grammatical and linguistic knowledge gained at GCSE. The course develops your knowledge and understanding of the diverse culture and language of the Spanish speaking world.

Choosing A-level Spanish is a smart move if you want a fascinating subject that offers you a range of career possibilities and a lot of fun along the way. It is now possible to do almost any degree with a language combination and Spanish is a “facilitating” subject which keeps your future options wide open.

Studying Spanish at West Kirby Grammar School offers you a flexible timetable and smaller classes which means that all teaching is tailored to meet your needs. Our specialist teachers have a wealth of experience who will work in partnership with you and support you all the way.

What is Involved?

In the first year of the course there are two themes:

Aspects of Hispanic Society and Artistic Culture in the Hispanic World

You will learn about the impact of the teachings of the Catholic Church and Franco on the family and how divorce and LGBT rights have irrevocably transformed Spain. You will study the changing role of Spanish men and women and how domestic violence is still a blight on Spanish society. You will look at the influence of the internet, social media and celebrity culture on young people. In addition, you will gain an appreciation of the diversity and richness of Spanish heritage through the study of art, music and traditions. There is also the study of a film, ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’, and grammar.

In the second year of the course there are two themes:

Multiculturalism which touches on the impact of legal and illegal immigration on Spanish society, the problems presented by racism and you will assess how successful the integration of different cultures and religions has been in Spain.

Aspects of Political Life in the Hispanic World includes the study of Franco’s dictatorship and its legacy, the challenges faced by the Spanish monarchy and current political movements in Spain. You will also study a literary text, The House of Bernarda Alba and grammar will be further consolidated.
